February 2018

RTÉ Programme Sales & Vision Independent Productions have closed a format deal with Cwmni Da Production Company for its multiplatform series Operation Transformation who will produce the series for Welsh language broadcaster S4C.

Under the deal, Cwmni Da will produce an 8 x 60’ series of the Irish public broadcaster’s flagship health-and-fitness makeover show for Welsh-language public-service broadcaster S4C. The Welsh remake has the backing of Welsh Government, Public Health Wales, Sports Wales, the Football Association of Wales (FAW), mental-health charity MIND, Bangor University, and Parkrun UK. It will debut on S4C on April 10 in a Tuesday-night primetime slot.

Operation Transformation, a 360-degree project that spans television, radio and online, sees a fitness instructor, dietician and psychologist develop a plan for the five participants in the show and viewers are encouraged to choose a person in the series most like them and follow their daily plan and track their progress with the show.

Grainne McAleer, RTÉ’s head of lifestyle, who has been commissioning Operation Transformation since the show debuted in 2008, said: “Over the past 10 years, Operation Transformation has made a positive contribution to health awareness in Ireland, and we are confident it will give an equally positive message to our Welsh cousins. It’s not a quick fix and it doesn’t magically transform people’s lives in eight weeks. Rather, it’s a springboard to healthier approach to food, lifestyle and self-esteem.”

Vision Independent Productions (VIP), producer of the RTÉ series and co-owner of the format IP, is advising Cwmni Da on the Welsh adaptation, which will closely resemble the Irish original both in editorial structure and visual presentation.

Philip Kampff, founder of VIP, added: “We are delighted to be working with Cwmni Da and S4C on bringing Operation Transformation to Wales. The success of the show is based on people stepping forward and lead the way by showing their journey to a healthier life and allowing other people to follow and share their experience. It’s one of the most rewarding shows to make because you can see real change in people’s lives.”

Neville Hughes,Exec Producer for Cwmni Da, added: “We are delighted to be bringing this valuable format to a Welsh audience. Its success in Ireland has been phenomenal. With the backing of our partners, we are determined to replicate the same interest and excitement here in Wales.”

Operation Transformation began its 11th season on RTÉ One in January. The 2018 series features a range of high-profile events, including Ireland Lights Up, an initiative with the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) to make walking safer and more accessible; 15 new 10@10 workouts for primary schools; nationwide walks; a 5K run and the Operation Transformation Awards, which recognise the individuals and businesses who have contributed to a healthier Ireland.
